The recent Hollywood movie War Horse was filmed extensively on Dartmoor. The farm and country scenes at the beginning and end of the movie were shot only a few miles from Holewell Farm.
Welcome to Holewell Farm
A Walker's Haven Nestling in a Charming Dartmoor Farm
In the wooded valley of the river Walkham in the south western area of the Dartmoor National Park a wonderful wilderness of moorland, valleys and granite tors. Five minutes walk to the moor and its spectacular views and walking. Located with complete privacy within the owners' small farm offering total peace and tranquillity (so many guests remark on this).
- Dartmoor – the last great wilderness in England. A place of stunning beauty and steeped in history from the iron age, through tin mining, rabbit warrening and quarrying.
- Holewell is on Dartmoor and walks start right outside our gate, with open, uncultivated moorland within less than ¼ mile.
- Peaceful walks. You will rarely encounter other walkers, especially during weekdays and off season.
- Sensational views in all directions on any walk you take.
- Places of mystery such as Wistman’s Wood and Cranmere Pool.
- Dartmoor prison at Princetown. You can also visit the excellent High Moor Visitor Centre exhibition as well as a good art gallery.
- The Abbots’ Way still marked by granite crosses
- See Dartmoor ponies roaming freely on the moor.
- Skylarks are a declining species, but they are still common on Dartmoor in the spring and summer as well as a huge variety of other flora and fauna including several species of deer, badgers and foxes.
- Many agreeable halfway destinations on walks such as pubs and places of historic interest.
- On Tuesday and Saturdays in late autumn and winter you may catch sight of one of the hunts trail hunting over the moor with their hounds. If you wish to attend a meet (they are always at 11.00 a.m.) we can usually tell you where they will be. You will find them very welcoming and friendly.
